Some things are best appreciated slowly, and Okavango Gin is one of them. Thoughtfully crafted and rooted in one of the most extraordinary landscapes on earth, each of our bottles that finds its way into your presence –  is a reflection of place, patience, and respect for nature’s rhythms.

Our distillery sits off-grid, immersed in a UNESCO World Heritage site overlooking the seasonal floodplains of the Okavango Delta. Here, where life depends on balance and timing, we’ve built a philosophy of distilling that meets this way of being. To tread lightly in such a fragile ecosystem means sacrifice, and our first departure was to leave any notions of mass production behind. Instead, we give ourselves the time and space to make something exceptional, in harmony with its surroundings.

One of our greatest discoveries has been the Mopane seed. This small, unassuming seed from the Mopane tree – a tree iconic to Botswana – holds within it an extraordinary secret. Rich in α-Pinene, a natural compound that carries resinous, pine-like aromas, it delivers the backbone of our gin’s flavour. Where juniper has long been the heart of gin elsewhere, Mopane has become ours: local, abundant, and alive with a character inseparable from the soil it springs from. We couldn’t be more grateful for Mopane’s presence!

Just as essential is the water, as no spirit can exist without it. The water that creates our gin has travelled more than a thousand miles from its beginnings in the highlands of Angola, flowing through sand and papyrus before reaching the Tsutsubega floodplain of the Okavango. By the time it reaches us, it carries with it the memory of that journey – a liquid archive of distance, geography, and time that infuses every drop of our gin with purity that cannot be recreated anywhere else.

Seasonality, too, is at the centre of what we do. In Gweta, when the Marula fruits ripen, the women of the village gather to brew Bojalwa ja Morula, a traditional beer that has been passed down for generations. It is this beer that we use in the first distillation of our limited seasonal Marula Gin. What results is both a flavour, and a cultural exchange: the fruit of ancestral knowledge, women’s labour, and seasonal abundance meeting the distiller’s craft. Every sip becomes a fleeting moment in time, preserved in a bottle.

We carry these principles into every decision, from our small-batch scale to our ecologically conscious operations and responsibly sourced packaging. Our philosophy directs our purpose; to create a drink that is a narrative of coexistence: of humans, water, trees, and traditions in dialogue with each other.

To taste our gin is to taste the Delta itself; its floodplains and forests, its ancient waters, its seasonal gifts, and its extraordinary patience. Okavango Gin is our invitation to slow down, to notice the intricate details that nature offers, and to find respite in the subtle exchanges that make life here so remarkable.
